How to Build and Scale a Beauty Brand in Colombia

Colombia's beauty and personal care segment generated US$3.565 billion in sales during 2025 and grew by 8.6%, according to the Cosmetics and Personal Care Chamber of ANDI (Colombia's National Business Association). A market growing at that pace creates real opportunities to build and scale a beauty brand. However, landing the first sales doesn't guarantee long-term staying power or profitability.

What Should Beauty and Personal Care Brands Consider to Scale and Stay Profitable?

Building a beauty brand in Colombia requires defining a value proposition, validating the business model, protecting the brand, developing the product, meeting health/sanitary requirements, defining a commercial strategy, and preparing production capacity. This guide walks through seven key factors that can make the difference between simply launching a product and building a business capable of sustainable growth.

1. Define Your Brand Identity

The first step is answering why someone would choose this beauty product over every other option already on the market. The answer must start from a real, specific consumer need and translate into a value proposition that goes beyond marketing talk — one the product can actually deliver on. If a brand promises effectiveness, convenience, or a particular experience, the product needs to prove it.

Brand identity also shapes how the brand presents itself — from the name and design to the tone of communication. When these elements all point to the same core idea, they build recognition and differentiation in the market.

2. Validate the Brand's Business Model

Market research provides the data needed to project financial viability. Who's buying? How much are they willing to pay? How often do they come back? These answers make it possible to estimate demand and build more realistic financial projections.

Repeat purchases carry significant weight in the business. A launch and marketing campaign drive that first sale, but long-term customer retention depends on the experience and results the consumer actually gets. Communication keeps the brand top of mind, reinforces its value proposition, and sets it apart from competitors — but it's the product itself that builds loyalty.

Profitability by sales channel also needs analysis. The same product can generate very different margins in a company-owned store, an e-commerce site, a marketplace, or a multi-brand retailer, since commissions, discounts, logistics, and commercial terms all affect the bottom line. That's why it's worth projecting sales, costs, margins, and break-even points for each channel before launch — and reviewing them continuously afterward.

3. Register the Brand and File for Mandatory Health Notification (NSO)

In Colombia, trademark registration and the Notificación Sanitaria Obligatoria (NSO, or Mandatory Health Notification) serve different purposes and happen at different stages of product development. Both need to be handled at the right time to avoid rework, wasted time, and unnecessary costs.

Trademark registration with the Superintendencia de Industria y Comercio (Colombia's industry and trade oversight body) protects the product's name and identifying signs. That's why it's smart to check name availability before investing in brand identity, packaging, and marketing. This process is different from commercial registration, which identifies the company or merchant itself.

The NSO is the health registration required for cosmetic products to be sold legally in Colombia, and it's filed once the product's technical information is finalized. The formulation, manufacturer, and other product details must match exactly what was submitted to Invima (Colombia's national food and drug regulatory agency).

4. Develop the Product and Manage Manufacturing

The product must deliver on the value proposition, meet technical specifications, and perform consistently batch after batch. Packaging protects the formula, withstands shipping, displays legally required information, and represents the brand's image. Packaging choices must also account for the formulation itself, since some materials can interact with product components — absorbing or releasing active ingredients or fragrances.

Manufacturing cosmetic, beauty, or personal care products requires specialized technical expertise. A formula that works in the lab can behave very differently once it moves to industrial production, where volumes, mixing times, and large-scale production conditions all change.

Product development also needs to account for stability testing and shelf life, which affect storage conditions, inventory planning, and stock rotation.

5. Define Your Marketing Strategy

Price, distribution channel, and messaging all need to align around a single strategy. Price depends on the brand's intended positioning, its target consumer, and the sales channel. A higher price point needs a proposition that justifies it — the product, packaging, experience, and messaging must all communicate value in line with what the consumer is paying. Otherwise, the price risks being perceived as simply expensive rather than a reflection of value.

Where a product is sold also matters — a product might perform well in a specialized channel but end up competing purely on price in another. The marketing strategy needs to define who to attract, how much they're willing to pay, where they can buy the product, and what will bring them back.

6. Manage Distribution and Sell-Through at the Point of Sale

Getting onto store shelves is just the first step. The real challenge is selling and maintaining the turnover rate that makes a beauty brand profitable. A slow-moving beauty product loses shelf space to faster-selling competitors. Slow turnover can also lead to expired stock, returns, and inventory losses. Stockouts hurt the business too — when consumers can't find a product, they simply switch to another brand, and that sale is lost.

Inventory ties up capital. Too much stock in the warehouse means immobilized capital; too little increases the risk of running out. That's why inventory levels need continuous forecasting based on demand, turnover rate, and replenishment lead times.

 7. Prepare Production Capacity to Scale

Before scaling, a brand needs to project how much it can produce, store, and distribute without compromising quality or delivery times. That capacity needs to match the brand's real-world capabilities and its business projections.

If a beauty or personal care brand is growing, it's worth evaluating the capacity of its suppliers and manufacturer. When any link in that chain can't keep pace with demand, the result is stockouts, delays, or unwanted changes to the product. Before scaling, a company needs to define what capabilities, investments, or partners it needs to meet its growth potential.

From Product Development to Manufacturing Built for Growth

A brand can have a clear value proposition, a solid understanding of its market, and strong consumer response. It might even achieve consistent production — and still hit a ceiling on growth. Scaling up production without compromising product characteristics, quality, or delivery times requires solid product development and manufacturing capacity built to match that growth.

That's why formula, materials, processes, and production capacity all need to be considered from the development stage onward, to anticipate the conditions a brand will face as demand grows. At Prebel, we partner with beauty and personal care brands on product development and manufacturing — from formulation through to production. We evaluate the technical and production requirements each project needs from day one, so it can reach the market and scale consistently.
